Tudor Launches Pelagos FXD Chrono “Pink” for Giro d’Italia

A sense of déjà vu is coming back. Just last week, we brought you Tudor’s latest carbon fiber watch, the Biwan Chrono, to celebrate its partnership with the Formula 1 team, the Racing Bulls. Just a few days after the release, Tudor has launched another carbon fiber chronograph based on the FXD platform. Like all of Tudor’s carbon fiber watches to date, this new FXD chronograph is also closely related to sports, which shows that Tudor’s ties with the world of sports are extensive and they are likely to continue to launch new watches for partners.

The new Pelagos FXD Chrono “Pink” Chrono is a sequel to the Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” released a year ago. Both watches were released to coincide with the famous Italian cycling event, the Giro d’Italia, for which Tudor is the official timekeeper. Last year’s watch was decorated with striking red to echo the uniform colors of Tudor’s professional cycling team. This year’s watch is pink, a nod to the race itself. At the start of each stage, the leader of the race wears the pink “Maglia Rosa” jersey, so pink has a deep connection with the Giro d’Italia and Italian cycling culture.

The pink embellishments on the tachymeter scale and the small dials at 9 and 3 o’clock contrast with the black dial and complement the fabric strap with a pink stripe in the center. Like the Cycling series watches released last year, the tachymeter scale of this watch is used to measure the speed of cycling, not the speed of racing (or any car). For such a limited edition watch, this design is a bit abrupt, but still pleasing. The specifications of this watch are also the same as last year’s watch, including a carbon fiber case with a diameter of 43 mm and a thickness of 13.2 mm, and a MT5813 chronograph movement certified by the Swiss Official Observatory (COSC) with a power reserve of 70 hours.

As we observed a week ago, Tudor seems to be carving out a niche for itself with carbon cased watches by forging one connection or another with sports partners. These sports partners tend not to be the most watched sports in the US, which adds a layer of glamour and exoticism to the project (before you taunt me in the comments, let me say that F1 is growing in popularity here, but it has a long way to go before it can become as integrated into the local culture as the NFL). It is worth noting, though, that in the cycling space, Bravur has been making highly specialized cycling-inspired watches for years, including several pieces inspired by the Giro d'Italia. The final product will of course be very different, but don't let anyone tell you that Tudor is the first mover.
